We’re pouring our hearts into a very special cause this year
2020 certainly had us rattled. A once in a century health crisis will do that. But while there was a lot of sad stories in the media, there was also inspiring ones – of people pulling together in their local communities to help each other out in tough times.
It got us thinking about our own community and what we can do to better support it and the families within it. It took only a moment for our hearts to settle on Bear Cottage in Manly. While we’ve all had a tough year, it doesn’t compare to those of families whose child has a life-limiting condition.
This year, we’ve set ourselves on a mission with the goal of raising $3000 for Bear Cottage. What we’d really like to do is smash this target, but we need your help.
What is Bear Cottage?
Bear Cottage is the ONLY children’s hospice in all of NSW providing respite and end-of-life care for terminally ill children and their families. It delivers a medically supported ‘home away from home’ with 24-hour round the clock excellence in paediatric palliative care. But it feels far more like a warm family home than a hospital ward, and that’s its very intention.
Why is Bear Cottage so special?
At the heart of this special place is the mantra ‘Here, life is for living.’ In a warm, caring, and supportive environment, families that are going through an unimaginably difficult time can spend some precious time together and make memories they will always treasure. Simple things like a day at the beach, a visit to Taronga Zoo or enjoying some fun activities together at the cottage; they will be memories forever etched in a family’s heart.
Families caring for a terminally ill child, often do so for many years and around the clock. It changes a family’s life forever. Bear Cottage also provides respite for these families – a chance to recharge and regroup. It runs specialised therapies in art, music, and play that helps both children and families explore complex feelings, feel more empowered and even increase levels of happiness. Innovative camps designed by the cottage for mums and dads, siblings and grandparents offer exhausted family members a chance to do something to better their own wellbeing supporting them in their onward journey.
A cause close to our heart
There is another reason why we’ve chosen Bear Cottage. Catherine’s mother – Vivienne Walker, has been a regular volunteer at the cottage for over 20 years, supporting children and their families with their wellbeing during their stay. The stories of her time at the cottage have continually inspired and deeply moved us over the years. We want to continue our family’s story of supporting this special place and service.
